IMPORTANT FRAUD ALERT: RISE IN CHEQUE THEFT
We want to make everyone aware of an increase in cheque theft and cheque fraud being reported across Nova Scotia and other parts of Canada.
Criminals are stealing cheques from mailboxes and postal collection boxes, then altering or reproducing them to commit fraud.
If you still use cheques, we recommend taking the following precautions:
Avoid leaving outgoing mail containing cheques in unsecured mailboxes or overnight in postal collection boxes.
Whenever possible, deliver important mail directly to a Canada Post outlet.
Consider using electronic payment methods such as online banking, EFTs,
pre-authorized payments, or CRA My Payment for government remittances.
Review your bank account activity regularly and report any unauthorized transactions immediately.
If you mail a cheque and the recipient advises it has not been received, contact your financial institution as soon as possible.
Cheque fraud can affect both individuals and businesses. Taking a few extra precautions can help protect your finances and personal information.
